“Nice game, boys,” Ryan said as he dropped onto the bench beside Pete and started undoing his shoes.

“Where are we meeting up with your sister and her friends?” Jeff Smith said as he sat down beside Ryan on the bench.

“Who said you were coming out to meet my sister?” Ryan asked.

“Pete said your sister was at the game with her friends,” Jeff replied.

“Yeah, what was up with you tipping your hat to my sister after your big hit?”

Pete shrugged. That probably hadn’t been his best idea, but he was stoked about the grand slam and wanted to see her face. “She was talking trash about my batting when she was in town, so…” He stopped talking, hoping Ryan would just let it go.

“That still doesn’t explain why you looked up at her. You could have trash talked her back later.” Ryan shifted in his chair so he was facing Pete. “It’s kind of weird you even thought to look up at her.”

Crap. Pete swallowed. What was he supposed to say about that?

“It’s kind of hard not to see her and her friends when they jump around in Hawks’ gear in the sea of red. It probably just caught his eye,” Ramon Gonzalez said from his cubby in front of them. “They kind of stood out in that crowd.”

“No kidding,” Pete laughed. He breathed a sigh of relief. Thank god for Gonzo. He’d dodged a bullet there.

“You gonna let Smitty and I join you guys?” Gonzo asked.

“If I let you come, my sister is off limits.”

“Why, is she married or something?” Gonzo peeled off his shirt and pants and grabbed his towel off the hook.

“No, but she’s too good for the likes of you guys. She’s not a groupie, she’s a relationship girl,” Ryan answered.

Pete’s stomach knotted at the reminder that Kendall was too good for him. He was the product of a broken home with a piece of shit dad, he’d barely graduated highschool and life had taught him relationships never last. And like Ryan said, she was a forever kind of girl, despite her protests otherwise. He couldn’t offer her anything. They lived in completely different states, for god’s sake. If he was smart, he wouldn’t even go tonight, but he wanted to see her. Even though he shouldn’t.

Pete stood up and pulled his clothes off and tossed them in the hamper as he made his way to the shower. While the water pounded down on his head, he tried to talk himself out of the way he was feeling about seeing Kendall again. She was Ryan’s sister. Yeah, they’d had a hot few days together, but they’d both agreed it didn’t mean anything. That it couldn’t go anywhere. So why the hell had his heart pounded when he’d seen her in the stands tonight?

After the shower, they strolled out of the locker room to find Kendall and her friends leaning against the wall in the hallway with the other wives and girlfriends. Pete’s chest tightened as he looked at her.
